CV & Artist Statement
My subject is the drama and nuances of continual change in the landscape. Fed by an interest in Geology, I look for dynamic places that hold visual evidence of their extraordinary formation. Influenced by Jaquetta Hawkes 1951 book ‘A Land’, which powerfully expresses a vision of the cataclysmic creation of our landscape, I try to work with the underlying energies and movement I perceive. The area around my studio is a rich source of subject matter, the Howgills are very ancient, and there are faults and limestone scars close by. Each year I visit Scotland to make working studies, in 2008 I explored the Assynt area. Whether I use oil, acrylic, charcoal or graphite, drawing is my most primary visual language. Working studies evolve in the studio through pushing the interface between drawing and paint and exploring the contradictions between the power and fragility of the landscape.
